Updated for Renters' Rights Act changes from 1 May 2026: rent is usually payable monthly in advance. From 1 May 2026, landlords and agents cannot ask for, encourage or accept rent in advance before the tenancy agreement has been signed. Once signed, tenants can be asked to pay a maximum of one month's rent in advance before the tenancy starts.
